Republic County Opportunity Zones
Republic County participates in the Federal Opportunity Zones program with the Kansas Department of Commerce, which offers investors special tax benefits for investing in economically distressed areas. This program encourages long-term investment in our community and promotes economic growth through targeted development projects.
Program Benefits
The Opportunity Zones program provides significant tax advantages to investors who put their capital to work in qualified areas. These incentives include temporary capital gain tax deferral, with the deferral period ending on December 31, 2026, or upon earlier sale of the investment.
Investors receive a step-up in basis based on how long they hold their investment. Those who hold investments for five years see their basis increased by 10% of the deferred gain, meaning they pay tax on only 90% of the original gain. Seven-year investors receive an additional 5% increase, reducing their taxable gain to 85%.
The most substantial benefit comes to investors who hold their investments for ten years. These long-term investors receive complete forgiveness of additional gains, with their basis equal to fair market value. This exclusion applies only to gains that accumulate after the initial Opportunity Fund investment.
Investment Opportunities
Kansas has 74 census tracts designated as Opportunity Zones, ready for investment and development. These investments support various projects including downtown revitalization, housing improvements, and expansion of industrial parks and innovation districts.
The program targets areas that need economic development support, creating opportunities for both investors and communities to benefit from new business activity and job creation.
Moving Forward
Opportunity Zones represent a powerful tool for attracting investment to Republic County. The program connects investors seeking tax benefits with communities that need development capital, creating partnerships that can strengthen our local economy and improve quality of life for residents.
