The Rural Busy

Welcome to another episode of Less People. I’m Jenny Russell. June is in full swing here in our area and that means all of the things.

I do think that around here everything is scheduled for June. That includes baseball, softball, basketball, football, and all of the things like harvest and all of those things that come at you from a rural area. I always say that you never know a busy person until you meet a rural busy person.

People think that living in a rural area is boring. I don’t know when you have time to be bored when you have a rural area like we have. This comes to mind of about a couple of years ago.

We were painting bleachers at the baseball field in the small town that we live in. Somebody who did not grow up in a rural area necessarily, I guess she grew up in the region, but she grew up in a town that was bigger than her entire county. She was saying, why do we have to paint these bleachers? Don’t we have city people, city managers, city workers that are going to paint the bleachers at the baseball field? Well, when you live in a town of less than 500 people, you don’t have staff that has time to do that.

I mean, they have much bigger issues and so if you want things done, you do them yourselves. I don’t think people who have not grown up in this atmosphere or people that are in less vibrant towns maybe understand that as much or if you’ve, like I said, grown up in an urban area, you have paid staff to do that in your town and you never have to step up and take it on. So that’s kind of why I spend this week and last week and the whole week of the whole month of June around here.

And so I just wanted to come to you and let you know that this is a Friday podcast of less people and this week’s is a little bit different because we have been running around like chickens with a head cut off around here and this is all the time I had to get this done this week. So just know that if you’re a rural person and you’re busy, I see you and I understand you and if you are in an urban area and think that rural is boring, I can definitely tell you it’s not. If you are bored in a rural area, you are doing something wrong because there are always things to get involved in.

If your community is not as vibrant as you would like it to be, then go out and get something done. Go out and find a project that you want to see done in your community, coordinate it and get it done. And if you need to fundraise for something, that could be you.

It could be you doing it. So that’s how life is around here right now. It’s crazy, it’s busy, but I guess we wouldn’t want it any other way and our communities would be very less vibrant if we didn’t have those things.
So sorry for this shortened version of less people this week. I wanted to make sure that I came to you and with my Friday podcast, as promised, every week, even if it wasn’t the normal content, we will hopefully be back next week with more from The Rule for Picture Show, our conclusion of those episodes and outtakes. And until then, happy summer.

Hope that you are surviving and hopefully that everything is going great in your rural community. See you on the next episode of Less People.
