Republic County to Host Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in March

Belleville, KS – Republic County E-Community, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the Republic County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge will take place in Belleville this March, as part of the 2016-2017 Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) series. The competition will be held on Monday, March 6th, 2017 at Republic County High School. The event is open to both Pike Valley and Republic County students. The goal of the competition is to expose Kansas middle school and high school students to entrepreneurship.

“In the past, RCED focused on adult entrepreneurship, providing resources and small business loans. We made it easier for alumni to come home by connecting them with jobs, housing, and student loan repayment after they have left our county. Coming full circle, we added a youth program that will serve as a catalyst to grow the county’s next generation of entrepreneurs,” stated Luke Mahin, Republic County Economic Development Director.

Republic County is one of many communities across Kansas to host a locally organized event designed to give students a hands-on entrepreneurship experience. The competition will consist of students preparing a written business plan or executive summary, a “tradeshow” booth, and an elevator pitch or presentation. The students will be competing against each other for over $1,000 in prize money. The students’ work will be judged by local entrepreneurs, public sector partners, teachers, or other adults. This is the 1st time Republic County has brought this competition to their community.

“Students tell us every year how local entrepreneurship competitions open their eyes to new career possibilities, reward innovation and creative problem solving, and give them valuable experience presenting ideas to a panel of judges. It’s a wonderful gift that the community can give their youth,” says Anne Dewvall, Manager of the E-Community Partnership.

During 2015-2016, 242 students from more than twenty communities hosted 16 local entrepreneurship competitions as part of the YEC series. The 2016-2017 academic year marks the fourth annual YEC series coordinated by NetWork Kansas and the E-Community Partnership.

The annual YEC series culminates in a statewide championship, where the top students from each local competition face off against each other for prize money and other honors. The 2017 statewide championship will be held on April 24th, 2017 at Fort Hays State University.

Business and local organizations have the opportunity to sponsor prizes/awards if they would like to participate. For more information contact Luke Mahin, Republic County Economic Development, at 785-374-3047 or rced@nckcn.com.
