US 81/36 ramps to close for construction

A road reconstruction project on US-81 in Republic County that began Monday, April 18 has progressed to the point when traffic has been switched to a head to head configuration, reports the Kansas Department of Transportation. The project begins 8 miles north of the Cloud/Republic County line one mile north of the US-81/US-36 Interchange. Construction involves removing the existing concrete down to the base material and replacing it with new concrete. Head to head traffic within the work zone will be reduced to one 12” lane in each direction. The US-81/US36 interchange ramps are being closed. All traffic that wants to transfer from one Federal highway to the other will be detoured onto 160 Rd, approximately ¼ mile west of the interchange (behind the Belleville 81 Livestock Sales).

Plans call for the project to be completed by Dec. 30, 2016 weather permitting. The purpose of the project is to improve ride quality and extend the life of the highway, says KDOT. In other local projects:

  • The new bridge over the Republican River at Republic will be completed in late summer/early fall.
  • A new mill and overlay project on US36 between Belleville and Washington is estimated to start in mid September.
