Summer Festivals – Republic County

North Central Kansas Free Fair July 28th to August 1st

144th version of NCK Free Fair kicks off next week – Belleville Telescope

One of the premier events in North Central Kansas, the NCK Free Fair, kicks off for five full days of activities next Tuesday, July 28. This years event will feature three headline music events on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in the Entertainment Center, and a $72,000 purse for the 38th running of the Belleville Midget Nationals on the Belleville High Banks Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

A record preliminary night purse on Thursday of nearly $21,000 awaits competitors of The USAC Honda National Midget Dirt Series. Friday’s show on the track is a 50-lap feature for the USAC Silver Crown Cars.

The JayHusker Mini Sprint Series will compete on the track’s infield quarter-mile track.

Featured entertainment this year in the Entertainment Center includes husband-wife duo The Blackbird Revue on Tuesday night, the a cappella Six Appeal Vocal Band on Wednesday night, and the country band Big Time Grain Company Friday night.

Throughout the week will be 4-H and open class shows featuring the best efforts of Republic County youth and adults; commercial exhibits, and numerous opportunities for food and fun. Longtime fair midway attraction Wagner’s Carnival will return with a full complement of rides and games. Some version of a fair has been held in Belleville since 1871.

The fair operated as a pay gate until 1919, and became a free fair in 1920. The event is planned each year by the volunteer NCK Free Fair board, and grandstand shows are under the direction of the Fair Amusements Committee, an arm of the Belleville Chamber and Main Street program. See Section B in this week’s edition of the Telescope for full details on shows and events and schedules.
