Rural Opportunity Zone Program – Republic County

The Rural Opportunity Zone Program went into effect on January 1st, 2011 Republic County is one of 50 Kansas counties designated because of our decrease in population over the last 10 years. To date 46 of the 50 ROZ counties have opted-in for the student loan reimbursement portion. Republic County signed on December 17th, 2012. This incentive is available to students who move into a ROZ county after earning a degree from an accredited post-secondary school. Area counties that have joined are Jewell, Cloud, Mitchell, Lincoln, and Smith. Click here for the ROZ Republic County information page on the Ks Department of Commerce website.

Republic County Economic Development has been a supporter of the ROZ program in Republic County since 2010 when the program was announced. To fund one person in the ROZ program it would cost Republic County $1,500 each year which is matched by the State of Kansas for $3,000 annually. Over 5 years that would total $15,000 paid to the applicant’s student loan debt as long as they lived within Republic County for the entire 5 year term. Republic County has currently signed on for $3,000 per year for the program (two applicants).

***Republic County Economic Development is asking if you are interested in donating to the ROZ fund to help us bring back our educated youth to the area. The Belleville Telescope, and other community members have recently pledged amounts as much as $500 per year for the program. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. ***
