Panther Producers

Appears in the Courtland Journal – February 1, 2018

Panther Producers is a partnership of Pike Valley FFA, Pike Valley Foundation and local producers to supply our school district with locally produced beef, pork and produce.

In early 2017, local producer, Mark Reed, initiated the idea of donating beef to our district for school lunches. Mark had heard of a program like this being done in Nebraska with success and wanted to see if it was something we could do here in Kansas, and specifically Pike Valley Schools. After conducting some research and conversations with school board members, food service personnel and community members he learned it was feasible for our district and the appropriate steps to take.

The first beef was donated in Spring 2017, and since then 3 more beefs have been donated. The Pike Valley Foundation has paid the processing expense on the animals and has pledged to continue covering this expnese. The donation of beef has provided a large savings to our school food budget. It is estimated by food service personnel that the annual savings on beef and pork products alone is $20,000.

Pike Valley FFA has come on with this idea and developed a partnership with the Pike Valley Foundation to facilitate the Panther Producers program as a project of the PV FFA Chapter.

The Panther Producer program is an opportunity to provide a wholesome, fresh product to the students of our district. In addition to providing a nutritious product and cost savings, the program offers and educational component, The program offers a chance to educate students about agriculture. Students should know and understand how their food is raised and what it means to have fresh and wholesome nutrition.

We encourage people to get involved! If you are interested in donating beef, pork, or produce we will gladly accept those donations, as long as they meet program criteria and inspection. We also will gladly accept monetary donations, payable to Pike Valley Foundation, c/o Panther Producers or online at

Monetary donations will be used toward purchasing future animals and a walk-in freezer to address current storage limitations we have within the district.

You are invited to come out to the Pike Valley vs. Lincoln basketball game on Friday, February 2nd and enjoy hamburgers, chips, cookies, and bottled water, all while learning more about Panther Producers! The meal will be free-will donation with all proceeds going toward the Panther Producer project.

Be a part of the investment in education and health of Pike Valley students.
