Clay Wallin, Nathan Lindberg, and Kyle Anderson, owners of Heartland Game Birds, have remodeled an old bank in Courtland, Kansas to start Heartland Lodge.

The lodge is primarily lodging for patrons of Heartland Game Birds, a guided pheasant hunt service. The building features two levels with multiple bedrooms, bathrooms and two full kitchens. There will also be open areas on the main floor for all guests.

November to March will be reserved for the guests of the guide service, but the remainder of the year will be available for Airbnb guests or rent out for local weddings.

The main entrance is the bank built in 1894 with the property covering a total of three lots. Space can accommodate lodgers, entertainment, and pheasant processing.

A stairway from the main area to the second-floor residence reveals three bedrooms with bunkbeds for 12 guests, three full bathrooms, laundry, and a full kitchen. Each bedroom and bathroom are key coded for individual groups.

The entire building has been gutted. Woodwork and windows were restored, and brick exposed to add to the lodge atmosphere. The first floor is under renovation for additional lodgers. Future plans include a drive-in garage to process game birds.

The future common area and professional kitchen will be used for catering to guests, with meals provided by professional chefs. The space will be large enough that it could also be rented for small gatherings. There is an outside enclosed area for another potential common gathering area.

“We needed lodging for our gamebird guests and decided to bring our business downtown to help keep the Courtland Main Street thriving and busy,” said Wallin. “We also wanted to save these old historic buildings so that we wouldn’t lose them.”

“Heartland Game Birds brings 300 to 400 hunters through a year, and by having the lodge downtown, the hunters will be able to enjoy what Courtland has to offer,” he says. “They can walk down to Pinky’s or AnTeaQues, where if we built something outside of town, they would have to drive in.”

Hunters who hunt on the Heartland Game Bird properties enjoy an extended season since the birds are grown and released by the hunting outfit. The services provided by Heartland Game Birds is full service guided service.
