Depot Market At Courtland Expands Retail Space

By Laura Leite Telescope News

Dan and Kathy Kuhn are the owners of the Depot Market. Dan went to school for fruit production and knew people from the area. He fell in love with the area and came here to manage the apple orchard for the Monk family. Later he purchased the land near the highway north of Courtland and in 1989 he moved the depot to its current location.

“Apples are Dan’s passion but with seven children to provide for, he needed an expanded funding stream,” said Kathy. “He started growing pumpkins and vegetables.”

Kathy came back into Dan’s life about 15 years ago when they became reacquainted over pumpkins. “Dan and I were lab partners at K-State in a fruit science class, but we lost touch after Dan graduated,” said Kathy. “Years later I was ordering pumpkins for a retail store that I worked at and we started visiting every year, he asked me out and a year later we were married.”

“I have always lived in a city,” said Kathy. “It was a big adjustment coming here and I love it.”

The Kuhn’s are excited to be remodeling and doubling the size of the retail space in the depot building. The tomatoes were in hoop houses and covered with frost cloth, so the late freeze did not affect them.

The blackberries did well despite the deep freeze that our area experienced this winter. “I took a stem home and it leafed out really well,” said Kathy.

“We are also excited to offer pick your own apples this year,” said Kathy. The Kuhn’s have set up an Espalier system behind The Depot. This system allows higher apple production in a smaller easier to harvest space.

In addition to pick your own apples, raspberries, and blackberries there will be a pick your own flower garden. There will also be flower arrangement classes as well.

In the fall there will be a sunflower field for photos, a corn maze and strawbale maze for the little ones. There will also be plenty of pumpkins for everyone to find their favorite.

During the Summer, the Depot is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Raspberry and blackberry picking goes from the end of June through July. August will be flower picking and pumpkins and apples will be toward the end of August with hayrack rides, mazes, and sunflower pictures in the fall.
