The Cuba community raised more than $35,000 last week during the 39th-annual Cuba Rock-A-Thon. The eight-day event featured a variety of speakers and entertainment, an auction, 317.5 hours of continuous rocking, and daily lunch and dinner. Cuba City Clerk Marilyn Junek said the Cuba Booster Club, which put on the event, sold about $16,000 worth of meals during the event and $13,167.50 worth of auction items. Donations helped bring the event’s fund raising total to $35,118.77. More than 265 items were sold during the three-hour auction Saturday night, including a $700 wood carving of a coon dog and $1,400 worth of kolaches.
The annual raffles for bicycles and rockers were also on Saturday. Arlie Cox won the glider rocker and Devyn Schou and Heather Freeman won the youth rockers. Billy Cherney, Ellie Jackson and Carsen Vizner won bicycles. Groups of volunteers served about 2,500 meals during the event, Junek said, including Czech Day’s jaternice and kraut and dumplings. Cuba Booster Club President Tom Lesovsky said about 250 noon meals were served each day on both Czech Day and Thursday’s fried chicken day. Two hundred evening meals were served some days, he said. In addition to the food and entertainment, the event hosted a ping-pong tournament for the first time. Lesovsky said about 25-30 people participated in the tournament. Local churches and organizations took shifts for the continuous rocking with as many as four rocking chairs rocking at once.
“Everybody is so good about helping out,” Lesovsky said. “It’s a community-wide effort. Almost everybody that comes volunteers in one way or another.” He said funds raised from this year’s event will go to the community hall’s back drop restoration, new sidewalks near the hall, landscaping on main street and various park improvements. “We’re just trying to make downtown look better all the time,” he said.
RCED Note: Tom Lesovsky joined the Republic Co. Economic Development board in 2013. He and the whole Cuba community have done another great job putting on the 39th Cuba Rock-A-Thon. We are excited to have Tom represent the east side Republic County on our board helping us find ways to grow as a county.
