Courtland benefits from expanding adult recreation.

Courtland benefits from expanding adult recreation.

Thanks to the Courtland Fun Day committee, Bryan VanMeter with the City of Courtland, Alsop Sand Co. with the sand donation, Kansas Bostwick Irrigation District for hauling the sand, and other volunteers we added a second volleyball court in 2016 to the City Park. This helped start our adult co-ed sand volleyball league with eight teams last summer.
For five Mondays, the league brought in eight teams, over fifty players, and other spectators. Most of the teams are from the Pike Valley area others traveled from Belleville, Concordia, and Clifton-Clyde. There are eight teams again in the league for 2017.
Since the second court was added in 2016, Courtland Fun Day was able to expand their tournament to sixteen teams hosting over one hundred players. Many of the teams were local but it provided alumni and friends the chance to travel back from Kansas City, Colorado, and other states to participate. The Fun Day tournament could host up to 24 teams if needed. Previously with one court that would not have been feasible.
Lights, nets, and balls have been purchased for the courts through league and tournament fees by the Courtland Fun Day committee. Volunteers from each team provide referees, score keepers, and timers.
July 22nd is the deadline to sign up for the Courtland Fun Day co-ed sand volleyball tournament July 29th. Register online – www.squareup.com/store/courtland-fun-day/ or call 785-374-3511.
