41st ANNUAL CUBA ROCK-A-THON
MARCH 13 – 19, 2016
318 ½ HOURS OF “ROCKIN”
41 years and more than a half million dollars raised for community projects through the efforts of more than 12,000 hours of volunteerism.
That’s the running tally in Cuba, where the annual Rock-a-Thon kicks off Sunday for a full week of food, entertainment, and rocking the community–in rocking chairs, that is. The event runs a full seven days through Saturday night, March 19.
Last year’s 40th anniversary event raised a record-breaking $40,000 in gross receipts. The community uses the money for projects like new sidewalks, upkeep on the park and community center, and to fund other local events through the year.
Along with local and regional entertainment, the Rock-a-Thon will host several entertainers who perform across the nation:
•Sunday night comedian/ magician/mind reader Gayle Becwar will entertain Rocka-Thon crowds. Becwar has worked with numerous celebrities, and been taped for HBO and Showtime Television.
•Comedian Toby KID from Iowa who has performed 15,000 shows across the US, including appearances on Good Morning America and ESPN. He is the featured entertainer Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
•Comedy hypnotist Steve Meade from Minnesota will take the stage Thursday night at 8 p.m. Meade has traveled from coast to coast the last 20 years on his “Virtual Reality Tour”.
Other highlights include a program Sunday night by National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson “There’s no place like … Cuba”; the RCHS Forensics Squad and a 4-H Talent Show Monday night; Czech Day on Tuesday; and Newlywed Bliss on Friday, featuring local couples. Saturday night closes with an auction of donated items that last year raised more than $15,000.
Each day the Rock-aThon committee serves noon and evening meals, and a breakfast the final day on Saturday morning,March 19 at 6:30 a.m. The Cuba Rock-a-Thon is a project of the Cuba Booster Club. Different organizations and individuals volunteer time to keep rocking chairs moving throughout the day and night.
